Ask any question about any book Part II

Hi,

I found a copy of Tarzan of the Apes at an estate sale. I know that it is a Grosset & Dunlap reprint, but are there any clues such as style of binding to know the approximate date of publication? It has a price of 150/150 on the dj flap. And how best to describe it, i.e. is it a "First Thus"?

debsfinebooks :

It is approximately from the 1950's--I could check more exactly in a bibliography on Monday.

Drop any thoughts of using "first thus."

Thanks oldbookshopnjI just wanted to check because I did see one on Abe listed that way, I suppose due to the way the copyright info that says "published June 1914," (but which I suppose refers to the McClurg edition). To me it does not feel like that old of a book, plus with the other titles listed both inside and on the back of the dj, that also did not seem like such an early reprint. Of course the seller I bought it from had it listed as "1914" on their tag, but I did not assume they would know. If you do have a chance to check it somewhere, I would definitely appreciate anything else you can find.

Debsfinebooks, your G&D Tarzan reprint most likely dates to 1960 as described on this very comprehensive website.

Grosset & Dunlap: 1960
Gerald McCann: DJ cover ~ no other illustrations

The immediately previous Grosset & Dunlap printing of your title would have been the 1943 Wartime Edition. Yours has no interior illustrations, correct?

Does anyone know how to identify a 1st printing of the 1st edition King book, Misery?
I have searched some King sites and they state""First published 1987 by Viking Penquin Inc"
on CP indicated a 1st edition. They don't seem to mention print run criteria
Thanks

Ask any question about any book Part II

Good morning everyone!
I have a question about a copy of Mark Twain's "Roughing It" that I picked up. The date has 1872. A few of the usually asked features.

Page 242 lines 20-21 has the word “he” but not the word “his”.

The “M” on the first line of the contents page xi does not appeared battered.

Capital "E" in eastern on page 330, line 23

Capital "T" in trees on page 156

"thirteenth" instead of "sixteenth" on page 156;

No advertising on page 592

Now the thing that is really throwing me off. It does not have the usual gilded picture and writing on the cover. The binder just has "Roughing It" over a line that then has "Mark Twain", all inside doubled gilded lines. Nothing on the front cover at all. Could this possibly be an intermediate state? Thanks for your help!

The two plates “Camping in the Snow” and “The Miners Dream” are in the front of the book, separated by tissue. Image and video hosting by TinyPicTim & Kathy

What more do you need?

I have noticed a few auctions stating "1st Ed. 1st print"

I can seem to find how they verifies the printing.

soonerbills: If it has no statement of any later printing on the © page,
then it is a first printing of the first edition.

[presuming, of course, that it doesn't have the book club faults:
such as no price on the dustjacket, etc.]

cajunbrat: Sounds like a rebound copy

Thanks Satnrose. That is what I was thinking. Going by what I have put, do you think it would be safe to list as a rebound copy, intermediate state? I just don't know at what point the ad wasn't included on page 592. Image and video hosting by TinyPicTim & Kathy
