New Fees Are Pure Greed

If  you go to the e-bay fee calculator that shows current fees compared to the new fees staring April 16th it pretty shocking for the amateur hobbyist guitar-seller.  If you don't have an e-bay store (because you don't sell that much) and are just a small hobby seller the new fee structure will put a total end to selling high end guitars on e-bay. For example if you sell a $3,000 guitar in a fixed price listing that cost $65 to ship, the current fee is $104.30. The new fee starting April 16th is $250. That's an extra $145.70. Wow! I remember a couple years ago it only cost $50 to sell a high end guitar. I'm sorry but these new fees are nothing more than total greed anyway you slice it.  Shame on you e-bay.  Why are you so greedy? X-(

Re: New Fees Are Pure Greed

Therefore... I liked the 2006 version of eBay better.

I much preferred the mid '60s when I could take a couple of days leave from Viet Nam and go to Thailand where gold was cheap.  23/24 carat pieces selling for a fraction of what they would bring in the US.  Large, heavy, ornate crosses so soft they bent easily were plentiful and cheap.

Therefore, absent getting shot by some small, brown person I'd never met, I liked the 1966 version of the world better.

Both of those (ebay 2006 & Thailand 1966) are gone forever so adjusting to 2013 reality seems to be the most reasonable thing to do.  Complaining that things used to be better might be fun but isn't very productive.

Re: New Fees Are Pure Greed

With any job , group , business ,club etc etc , that you spend years with ,one year or event will stand out  more than others ,things change . Comparing yesteryear to today is pointless as things will never go back to that time, all we can do is evolve and accept the changes for what is . If you don't like things the way they are or it isn't cost efficient to sell  than leave or quit selling ,

No one likes having to pay fees ,and it sucks that fees get raised but only you can figure out if it is cost efficient enough to keep selling .

As far as competeing with the chinese sellers , sell something different than the chinese sellers are selling or do what so many others have been doing  ,import the items and put a big sold in the USA sign on your listing .

I don't do normal.......

All the more reason to use Craigslist. I have not sold on Ebay for a while and now I remember why. Fees are ridiculous. Now fees on shipping as well. I went in the hole on shipping on both items I just sold trying to be fair on my flat rate shipping costs.

Uh.... I would re-think the craigslist thing. I would rather deal with the fee's than the unknown and here is why.....

Classifieds site Craigslist has been linked with 330 crimes, 12 murders and 105 robberies or assaults in the United States last year due to anonymous interactions on the site, says a new study.

The study undertaken by AIM Group, which examined nationwide crime reports reported in local media coverage, concludes the anonymity on Craigslist is exploited by criminals across the country to rob, assault or even kill consumers as they try to buy or sell things like cars, apartments and furniture.

The report calls Craigslist “a cesspool of crime,” citing murders, rapes, robberies, assault and rental rip-offs as some of the examples. AIM concludes these are “everyday occurrences” on Craigslist, warning users that “the old rules of ‘meeting in public’ and ‘knowing whom you’re dealing with’ no longer apply.”

Anonymous classifieds can pose a serious danger to consumers and as a result Craigslist has become a ‘one-stop shop’ for criminals, says Peter Zollman, founding principal of AIM. In this era of Facebook and social networks, it’s smarter and safer to sell a car or a couch to someone you know. We’ve followed Craigslist closely for 10 years. Even so, we were shocked by the volume of crime and the number of killings linked in some way to Craigslist.

To be fair, Craigslist as an entity can’t be blamed for the things that happen among its users. It’s merely a facilitator of commerce, after all, says Zollman in a blog post. And we understand thousands or even tens of thousands of transactions happen safely between Craigslist aficionados. Long before Craigslist, even, robberies were linked to newspaper classifieds from time to time.

But that’s no longer an excuse that Craigslist can hide behind, says Zollman.

It’s not enough for the company to say it has eliminated “escort” and “adult” services ads – euphemisms for prostitution ads. And that it posts warnings on the categories like rentals and personals and … (OK, we could go on and on) … that are susceptible to crime, fraud and abuse.

The unfortunate fact is that Craigslist has become almost synonymous with crime, says Zollman.

According to the AIM report, a recent rash of robberies in Oakland, California was traced to a gang of men advertising luxury cars for sale on Craigslist and then robbing and in some cases assaulting buyers who responded.

Police in Chicago have labeled Craigslist crimes, “robbery by appointment” because criminals in the Windy City regularly use Craigslist to identify victims and have the luxury of scheduling their crimes. The most notorious crime last year led to an entire family being taken hostage and the father shot dead in front of his wife and children, who were also assaulted.

Online classifieds are a very social form of commerce. While the conversation starts online, it ends in a face-to-face interaction. Anonymous online conversations can lead to poor offline behavior, said Craig Donato, CEO of Oodle, a Craigslist competitor. On Oodle's Marketplace, people who post or respond use their real identity on Facebook, introducing appropriate social norms back into the conversation.

Re: New Fees Are Pure Greed

I am truely curious if those that scream greed have ever had an economics class.

Prices will always rise to the highest point they can.  Always.  On every venue, every time, without fail.  When the cost finally exceeds demand only then will the cost decrease.

Ebay will continue to raise our costs as much as the market will bear.  It will NOT stop until the market will not bear it any more.  Where is that point?  Who knows.  For some it's now and for others they will do just fine.

Re: New Fees Are Pure Greed

Komo - Yes, that would definitely be a very baaad thing!

Vasox - I really think it depends on what you are selling and the price point.  I have had good luck buying and selling on CL - sold a lawn mower and baby stuff (the toddler's table and chairs went immediately - I could have sold 25 of them if I had that many) - sold a treadmill and bought a treadmill.

I would never try and sell jewelry or "high dollar" items, but for heavy and/or everyday items that are difficult to ship, CL can work - just use common sense when dealing with the buyers.

Re: New Fees Are Pure Greed

There was a story on the news the otherday of someone who was selling a computer on CL and met in a store parking lot.  The "buyer" beat the guy up rob him of the computer and his money.

That said I sell on CL during the summer.  In the winter its to hard because I live in the middle of nowhere and no one will drive through the snow to get their.

You didn't know the Lord built a bridge to Hawaii?

Then the joke....

A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden, he said out loud, "Lord, grant me one wish."

The sunny California sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice, and the Lord said, "Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish."

The man said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over anytime I want."

The Lord said, "Your request is very materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take over thousands of miles! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honor and glorify me."

The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say " nothing!", and how I can make a woman truly happy."

The Lord replied, "You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge!
