paid 10 cents for my item.
I sold it for $5
Buyer paid $5.40 (8% tax)
eBay charged me $0.70 + $0.30
Bubble mailer $0.08
It cost $3.72 to ship.
My profit before eBay took their fees was 11 times what I paid for the item.
How can eBay do this to me?
eBay took 91% of my profit, but at least by not promoting it I
left myself enough money to buy another $0.10 item.
Getting closer to that condo in Boca every day.

Sounds like you may be offering "free shipping."
Surprise! "Free shipping" is not free for the seller.
Make your buyers pay for shipping, and your profits will increase.

Dont forget to estimate a 10 percent return rate as well just to be safe....
Cost of shipping back to you as well......
Oh and then there is that tax thing on income as well:
yet with your example maybe a loss instead...
Rotflol;
One can make money doing it the way you say if the sell enough stuff.....if they they correct it and make a penny or so.....
I can not believe the listings I find that for sure there is no profit in: eBay makes a buck: I doubt the seller does..

Really easy to fix this - stop offering free shipping. Shipping isn't free - somebody has to pay for it.

Why are you putting all this work into selling $5 items? Your time is worth something. You can probably make more money in the same timespan with a part-time job - McDonalds or someplace like that. Good luck.

Must have sold that item under another ID

Sad to say eBay is NOT doing this to you. You are doing this to yourself. Examine your business and cost models and revise your listings to make a reasonable return on your investment.

Yes, well, a joke, and/or parody from other posts that are continually made about how the excessive/hidden eBay fees are destroying the ability to make a profit on low priced items. (and higher priced items)
Perhaps I chose the wrong emoji.
Should have instead used the .... ................ insert your sarcasm emoji here ( )

Free Shipping means shipping is included in the price and not as a line item.
So your cost for the item was 10c + shipping cost.
Mark up from there.

This is not the kind of business acumen I'd be going out of my way to make public.

Great satire. 😃

If people think eBay fees are crazy, just wait until they get that condo in Pittsburgh & start paying the insane city, county, & state taxes. Oh, I forgot the gas tax.

Why not? This is just the sort of thing centers of higher learning are looking for in professors to teach in the MBA programs.
Harvard is probably on the phone, or email, right now.
