Sorry to post twice in the same afternoon, but I save up my mysteries!
Here's the second question mark: the Ava Gardner bowl. I call it that because, when I search all kinds of keyword searches on Google, all I can find is that Ava Gardner apparently owned a bowl like this! It's very charming, with a swan and water lily motif in blue, with intricate gold hand-painted details. There is a slightly scalloped rim and a short foot ring. It measures 6 inches wide and 2 inches high.
The only similar blue and gold hand-painted pieces I'm familiar with are from Stangl, and I thought this mark looked similar to other Stangl pieces I've seen ("Hand painted | 5888"). Plus I know Stangl's gold line went to the 5000's in numbering. So I thought it might be a late Stangl bowl, but it isn't listed in my one Stangl reference.
Thanks for any suggestions. Best regards, George

IMHO,
This is porcelain not earthenware as Stangl would be.
I suspect this is Japanese (maybe 60's / 70's), many import companies used 4 digit production numbers.

Made in Japan was my first thought upon seeing it.
