Q about earring parts.

If you are describing earrings that have dangles, what do you call the part that attaches to the ear?  I know this is a silly question but I am stuck.

Thanks.  I think in my description I called the top part the head.  Does that sound insance?

I suppose that would depend on what the top part consists of.

Peach I did a search of,  clip-on earrings components, and from what I could find, it looks like they are called a base.
