Trying to Identify Document Seal? Revenue Seal? Postal Seal?

Hi,

I'm trying to identify the following two items that were amongst a large job lot of old postal covers.

Never seen anything like them before and dont even know what they are in order to start searching for information. For example year is 72 and 47, im guessing thats 1872 and 1842, but if its to do with documents and not postal then maybe its older?

One embossed seal says Five Shillings, the other says One Pound Ten Shillings.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

They appear to be British embossed revenue stamps. The stamp was embossed on blue or biege paper, then was glued to the document (usually vellum). A seal of the reigning monach was attached to the back to prevent reuse. As far as dating, hard to say since the use goes back to the late 17th or early 18th centuries. Hope this helps.

The "VR" on these refer to "Victoria Regina" for Queen Victoria so, 1842 and 1872 would both fit. Deeds and other legal documents were taxed and the stamps showed that the tax had been paid.
