PAIN IN TOOTH LONG AFTER ROOT CANAL

I'm wondering if anyone can help me.
I've been going to a dental school to get cheaper prices on my dental work. The first thing they did was to tell me I needed a root canal and so I let them do it.

That was six months ago and it hurt after they did it. They kept saying the pain would wear off. I think it's also making my sinus blocked up and I have a sinus headache all the time.

Finally they did xrays and the head of endodontry said that the root canal looked beautiful. He tapped on my teeth and I almost went through the ceiling when he tapped lightly on the root canal tooth.

The he tested my teeth for cold and he said that it was the NEXT tooth to the root canal tooth that the gum was sensitive to cold.

He says THAT tooth needs a root canal.

Meanwhile, the original root canal tooth that they did is killing me. I can't chew on that side and even if I put my finger on that tooth it hurts.

I always though that after the nerve had been removed from a tooth you couldn't have pain. This is horrible. Can anyone help? TIA

As for her laughing at you--COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR. Toothaches can make other teeth hurt--top tooth to bottom tooth & vice versa. It's called "referred pain" and very well known & an everyday occurance in the dental field. I would tell her where to stick it...of course, after you are done with her treatment altogether ]:)

Did you have a fistula on the gums by the tooth? (like a pimple or bubble) That would be grounds for her opening the tissue for drainage. Did you have a bad taste in your mouth?? If so, then you did have some pus that was then able to drain & relieve the pressure. No, it's not something that needs sutures--all you need is a tiny incision for the exudate to ooze out.

I'm glad the pain Rx is helping better now. Man...doctors like her, laughing at a patient, they need some medicine of their own sometime.....Is she a new young doc? Are there other endodontists in your area? I know we in our capital city only have 1...they are few & far between!!

ok, this is gross this early in the morning...don't read if you are queasy!!

Even though it looked more like blood, you can be sure that some pus was in the blood as well. Some pt's, when you open them up, it's like a huge pimple popped and you have white goo everywhere. Others jsut have a little oozing of blood & exudate, but--they DO get relief once all the bad stuff has drained out.

I don't know if there are other Endodontists around the area, but she seems to have been around for quite some time. The building she occupies has all the earliest doctors around. She even told me that there was no puss at all when she had opened it up. But currently, it's been about 12 hours since I took any painkillers and I feel great. Well not all that great, but it's not bothering me anymore. The cut itself is actually bothering me now.

She claimed my upper teeth had no relation to the bottom teeth, but when she tapped on my teeth, the tooth next to the one with the RCT hurted alot more than the one with the RCT. I had even suggested that the pain travelled from the nerves to the joint of the jaw bone, and to the top nerve. There was no pimple underneath the tooth. She just simply opened it up because she was sure that was the problem. I don't know if it's her that made the pain go away, or if it's just coincidence that the pain disappeared over night after she had done it. But either way, I feel comfortable with getting a permanent crown now.

No...you wouldn't actually have gotten the infection/toothache to really 'travel' to an upper tooth, but the pain can radiate, making the opposing teeth feel they are now the culprit = ) Fun, eh. And it is very likely you have sore teeth right next to this RCT tooth, our nerves are so intertwined & that isn't uncommon. Once this initial tooth settles down for good, you'll be a happy person 😄

Strange though, why she made an incision, with no fistula visible....but, they are the specialist, so maybe it was an old trick in her book. Glad you are doing better!!

PAIN IN TOOTH LONG AFTER ROOT CANAL

Alright, I know I'm coming into this very late, but I'm having the EXACT same problem as the original poster, and I've been living on Prednisone ever since, as there's no sign of infection, pain isn't affected by antibiotics, and my whole cheek/jaw swells up and hurts when I'm off Prednisone!
I've had 3rd opinions, and no one's found a failed root canal or fracture, but those sound like my only options?

My dentist has offered to extract the tooth, but without travelling out of state, there's only one guy who does implants in my area, and he would charge me $7000. Even at $3000-4000, there's just no way I could possibly afford it - I work two jobs just to afford my home and bills, and support my family. Times are tough right now, and my husband got laid off, and has yet to find profitable new work. I have no credit cards at the moment. The root canal and multiple eno visits have eaten up almost all of my meger savings.
So, without losing my place to live or a car, I could never fund an implant.

What options do I have? What kinds of issues will I face removing molar #18 and not having an implant?

BTW, this has nothing to do with poor dental health - I was born with multiple tooth deformities that have plauged me through my whole life. In this case, the tooth was shortened and the root was snarled up, almost at a 90 degree angle at one point. While applying a filling preventatively to an area that was impossible to brush well the dentist drilled into the soft tissue nerve - which she claims was closer to the surface than it should have been?

I just came across this blog after searching the web for some answers about my tooth pain. I have been suffering with a problem tooth for well over two years. I had a root canal last year at this time, with no relief. This year I went to an endodontist and had a retreat of the root canal. There is no fracture and no infection that I am aware of. I sit here tonight in agony. I was told to wait a few weeks before having the root canal and crown filled with a permanet cover, but I am not sure if that should be done if the pain is getting worse. I was just wondering how newenglandnew is faring out after all of this time.

In my opinion, if your having pain, they are missing something and I wouldnt get a crown, you'd waste money...I should know. After finals are finished I'm getting my failed root canal pulled and since its basically in the back, I am not bothering doing anything else. Too much can go wrong (because so much has already) and I'm so sick of hearing so called "odds" of anything happening, but always seem to happen to me. The "odds" that you will have a failed root canal is just barely 10%, thats almost a 90% success rate, So, since I'm fairly intelligent, I tell them..hey, if its a 90% success rate on the 1st (failed attempt) and you want to do a 2nd one with only slightly less than a 80% success rate..if it fails with 90%, my odds are even worse the 2nd time around...I swear..they dont care, just want that money! So, NOW I had to suffer throughout the semester..luckily I have about a week.
Good luck...dont forget to ask questions, get some xrays, have them check for hairline cracks which are very difficult to find sometimes and usually what causes pain...

PAIN IN TOOTH LONG AFTER ROOT CANAL

i've got a strange one. had a rc june 08' with the crown done approx. a month later. about 3 weeks after that the crowned tooth started feelinging "funny". no pain, but i could feel the pressure with my tongue and finger. no pain chewing. i went back to endo with another problem and they took an x-ray of this tooth and said there was nothing wrong and that it sometimes takes 6 months to heal. well here it is almost 11 months and it still feels the same. i don't want to go back because im afraid they'll tell me it has to pulled and i hate to see what the costs of other options are as we have no dental insurance. any suggestions?
