Speyer am der Speyerbach - 50 Pfennig - 1917 - nr 532.

13 May 2021: Greetings to all coin & token collectors where-ever you

might be.  Heron is happy to report this Speyer 50 Pf., although it is not

a 'recent' acquisition.   What happened is this:  Heron purchased this

item in 2013 (as marked on the 2X2).   Then, for some unknown reason,

this item was placed in the 2X2 carton that holds the 'extra' Austrian

coins and tokens.  This German item was just recently 'found' by Heron when he was searching for an Austrian coin.   Some day Heron should look through ALL these cartons to see what else can be found.  Fun stuff

is this hobby!

Note: The coin/token is 23.3mm dia-round-zink-& VF+ grade.

Note: Speyerbach River is 37 miles in length and flows into the

Rhein River just east of Speyer the city.

Note: Speyer City is now in Rheinland-Palatine State of Germany.

Obverse:  Speyer City Coat of Arms at center.

                     Legend:  KREISHAUPTSTADT *SPEYER*.

Note: Kreishauptstadt = District Capitol City.

Reverse:  Very large 50 at center.  Legend-Kriegsnotgeld.

                     Date....  19... large 50... 17.

Note: Kriegsnotgeld = War Emergency Money.

Note: Mint= Joergum und Trefz, Frankfurt.

Note: Issuing Authority = Rheinfalz of Kingdom of Bavaria.

Note: This coin is NOT for sale.  This information posted here is for

sharing the FUN of coin and token collecting with fellow coin

             and token collectors.

Short history of Speyer:

10 BC - First Roman military camp built at Speyer.

346 AD - First mention of a Bishop assigned to Speyer.

5th Century - Town is destroyed by armies fighting over territory.

7th Century - Town rebuilt and named Spira.

1030 AD - Emperor Konrad II begins Cathedral construction.

1294 - Bishops lose most of 'rights' and Speyer becomes an Imperial

             Free Town.

1806 - Holy Roman Empire is disbanded.

1816 - Speyer Municipality becomes part of Kingdom Bavaria.

**A nice surprise for Heron when searching through a box of Austrian

items.  And finding a 50 Pfennig with a nice Coat of Arms, issued for

a town located on a River, and with an interesting history.  All good

reasons to have this item in the accumulation.  And the search goes

on.  Hoping to reach 555 items by October 2021.   What a great hobby

coin & token collecting can be!   Never a dull moment. **

Yes!  Absolutely correcto!  Regarding the Speyer coin,  it WAS a super

fun 'find'.   Placed in storage container in 2013 and found in May 2021.

Heron cannot remember why the coin was placed in a container of

Austrian coins but it was a lot of fun to find the rascal...!
