Europa C&O #335 Bydgoszcz 3 Polker [16]24 Silver

15 Septiembre 2017: Greetings to all coin collectors where-ever you may be! In the ongoing effort to help keep this coin & paper money chatting place alive,

Heron reports a coin from Municipio Bydgoszcz.  No, elHeron cannot pronounce it.

However, this is another of those Eastern issues that are interesting and add to the slowly growing number of Zentral & Oest issuing entities.

The Coin: Bydgoszcz Poland - 3 Polker or 1/24 Taler - 1624 - Silver - 18.5mm

Note: Vareties Exist!

Obverse: at center, Crowned Coat of Arms King of Poland & Grand Duke of Litu.

                   Legend: SIGIS 3 D.G. [another 3 in shield 6 oclock] REX P M D L.

Reverse: at center is the Imperial Orb with '24' in field.  Date 2 orb 4.

Legend: MONE NO [mintmark 6 oclock] REG POLO.

Notes: 3 Polker equals 1/24 Taler.

The Polish name Bydgoszcz equals Bromberg in Deutsche.

Kasimir the Great University was located in Bydgoszcz.

Bydgoszcz is located on the Brda River.  Now a 'hot' tourist spot!

Some History:

1238 - First mention as a Castellany.

1331 - Town occupied by the Teutonic Knights.

1343 - Town relinquished to Kingdom Poland by Teutonic Knights.

1346 - Polish King Kasimir III granted 'city rights' to Bydgoszcz.

1772 - Area grabbed by Kingdom of Prussia in the 'big land grab of '72'.

Name of town changed to Bromberg.

1824 - In Bromberg was born Alexander Schimmelpfennig, a USA civil

             war general on Union side.

Schimmelpfennig not to be confussed with Schusselpfennig!

**This acquisition was a fun trip back into eastern Europa!   Finding another municipio issue was another good step towards 350!   And the research for this item was super fun.   This coin collecting hobby is really great fun, for a lifetime!**
