5 Marzo 2018 - Greetings to all coin collectors, where-ever you might be! Heron is very pleased to report acquisition of Europa Central & Oest number 359. This town has a lot of history. Some of it is quite interesting.
The Coin: Hameln 3 Pfennig - Silver - 1672 - 14mm Dia.
Catalog Kalvelage/Schrock 268B.
Obverse: At center is large fancy H. Legend "QVERNHAMELN".
Reverse: At center is Imperial Orb with 3 in lower half of orb.
Date divided; 16 orb 72.
Note: Some English speaking folks will recognize the name of this town as Hamelin. And perhaps would be familiar with the 'legend' of Hamelin.
Note: QvernHameln translates as 'sorrowful Hameln'.
A Short History:
C. 851 - Monestary Founded. A village grew nearby.
12th Century: The village becomes the town of Hameln.
1284: Incident with 'The Pied Piper' is said to have occurred. True or myth?
1634 - Hameln besieged by Swedish Army during 30 Years War.
1664 - Town of Hameln greatest era of prosperity began when Hameln became a
fortified border town of Principality of Kalenberg.
1705 - Hameln became part of Braunschweig-Luneburg.
2018 - Hameln now in Staat Niedersachsen - Kreis Hameln-Pyrmont.

**This was a very neat 'find' for el Heron. Having studied the 'myth' of the Pied Piper in H.S. in 1949-50 year it was a great thing to acquire a coin from such a well known town in Germania. A good one for number 359! This is another example of why coin collecting can be super fun! We never know what we will 'find'. What a great hobby! **
