Looking for information...author, publisher...on a pre-1955 children's book probably titled The Littlest (or Little? or Lost) Unicorn, who was small, and lost. Might have been privately published, but did show up in a northern NJ elementary school library (local author, privately published?) Black and white pencil or chalk drawings. Need the actual full title and author in order to do a real search for it.

Kat: there is a 2018 release called The Littlest Unicorn by Christopher Whelan. Not likely to be what you are looking for as the author who was english was born in 1970.

Worldcat search for "Unicorn"/Children's book/1940-1955

You can back the start date up using advanced search, and make the list shorter by limiting the upper end to the beginning of your last search.
Good luck: you give us very little to go on.

One of the things I came to realise after using that forum for a while is how easily the mind can play tricks when it comes to recalling details. Can you even be 100% certain that it was a unicorn?

This appears to be the current entry page for the book stumper site posted:

Also, going on what argon suggested (different word than "unicorn") I was trying "pegasus" and found a book from 1945 that has a mixture of color and monochrome illustrations: Eric Joysmith's book Pegasus, the Little Horse.
Some illustrations here: https://www.rookebooks.com/product?prod_id=30166
However, the plot as listed in Google Books doesn't sound much like what you remember, so I'm very unsure about this. It's just a suggestion. Here's the description: Pegasus is a little horse who travels to the city to find adventure. There he meets Peggy the Performing Pony at a circus. After joining her in a wonderful performance, Pegasus returns to the country with his new friend.
Good luck!

Could it be this title: The Colt from Moon Mountain? Published in October of 1941 and based on the cover board, it looks like it has black/white illustrations.

Good find!
Here's a listing that includes some of the illustrations. An ex-library copy, or at least ex-college.

Many thanks to all of you for your information and suggestions. While my sister thinks the Moon Mountain book is not the one she's looking for (I say who knows what you'll decide if you take a closer look!), she does think it's the same artist, so that's an avenue to pursue that we didn't have before. Thanks again for your help!
