Ask any question about any book Part II

The Life of Abraham Lincoln, Sixteenth President of The United States
by Frank Crosby
Published by John E. Potter and Company
No date on title page
Copyright page states only "Copyright John E. Potter & Company"
End of Preface dated 1865.

In addall there are copies listed "presumed first edition" for the 1865 copyright.

Google Books shows a copy of this with "1865" on the title page. So assume this to be the first edition by this author.

So, obviously I don't have a first edition, but my copy has additional points that the Google Book copy does not. Mine has one page of Lincoln quotes after the ffep with verso blank. Next page (recto) has a colored presentation page, "copyright 1885, by Thos Hunter" in the lower right corner. The frontispiece has the artist name R. Whitechurch .. directly under Lincoln.

My search came up with no similar editions. Is this a first edition thus or something else?

I wouldn't call it a "first edition thus",

even though it might be.

Not only is that phrase confusing,
but I don't think there is enough to make the difference significant.

On the other hand, if the "presentation" has something special about it,
such as Freemason, or political,
that might be important.

Satnrose,
Thanks for the quick reply.

I am always confused when I see "first edition thus" used.

The only thing special, I think, about the presentation page is the decorative color. Although, if I saw a Freemason symbol I wouldn't know what I am looking at.

The presentation is:

To Colamer E Plass
Christmas Present
By A.B. Plass
Birch Run Sag-Co, Mich
Dec. 25 1886

My search for those names revealed insignificant info.

I have to go out for a bit. Will check back later.

Thanks again.

So, guess that's that. Thanks you guys.

Oh well, I got some other good ones, so I'll slip Baby Cloud in mid-stream of a bunch of similar listings and maybe someone will discover it.

Now, I've left my toast and coffee waiting while I checked in....

Satnrose,
Thank you.

Would it be correct to say this copy is a "second edition" or "1885 Edition of the 1865 Copyright"

or is there something else more appropriate?

Thank you.

I truly appreciate all the time you take to not only help me, but the others that come here with questions.

I spent some time at the library today and could not find any reference to this or the "presumed first edition" and the librarians did not have a clue.

Have a great evening.

Morning!
I have this set...
http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/3110900?tab=details#tabs

Mines complete with all 12 volumes in the "Wardrobe", and I also have the original box they came in. I have found several references to this set, in various degrees of completeness, ranging from $50 to $150. But I do not find any listed with the exterior box.

Can anybody give me a clue how much more "value" this adds?

Thanks satnrose. I believe I saw the one you're referring to on Amazon, and agree that the designs on the book cabinet are "more interesting", although not a complete set.

It's the exterior box that the cabinet is in, that I haven't found anywhere else and am trying to determine value for...

Maybe that's what your referring to? Did you locate another one with its exterior box?

Thanks for the listing advice, I'll use it! 😉

Anyone got a subscription to Artfact? It'd be helpful to see what it says about this book as there's nothing recent on Americana Exchange.

Thanks, with the decade of inflation added on £250-300 looks about the right ballpark then.
