The latest index to "A Book that Looks Like Nothing"... 02Jan2006

The newest additions, since the last index was posted on this thread, now have the posting # placed at the end of each reference... since posting #709... an example:

Alcoholics Anonymous 1st Edition (#759-760)

At the end of the above reference is (#759-760)... meaning it refers to postings #759 thru 760 above

Since "A Book that Looks Like Nothing" has reached 21 pages i've posted this list at the top of page 21 and do NOT plan on posting this updated list seperately as a few newbies end up posting on the seperate list instead of here on this permanent thread.

If anyone would like to do the same on past postings from #1 to #709 then before you post it here please post an announcement to this list that you are doing it so we don't have umpteen postings for the same index... i'm sure many would find it useful instead of using the search feature to find the posting : )

For the benefit of anyone just now coming in... pasted below is what this index is all about:

Who likes to begin reading a lengthy book on the last page? Especially one without a table of contents or an index? Here's the latest index of the thread "A Book that Looks Like Nothing" that is 'permanent' in that it is kept anchored at the top of the Bookseller page. So now that you can find your way around the looooooong thread maybe you'll add a posting?

Here's a list of all the books mentioned from the beginning of the discussion that could be found in the last couple of days (the links to auctions are only good for a short time so those aren't included). Hope some of you will print the list and take it with you when you go book hunting... happy hunting!

'American Psycho' by Bret Easton Ellis
Vintage Contemporaries trade pb 1st printing is the first edition. Controversy over this disturbing book caused the original publisher (Simon & Schuster?) to back out so it wasn't released in hardcover. Not especially valuable...yet, but very saleable. Get it signed?

nice to see this topic. I work hard on learning what is valuable and i try to read alot but in the meantime i pick up almost anything and price check it. I find it a good learning tool anyway and i often find $20.00 paperback novels and $50.00 books i would never have picked up if given the choice. Of course i don't pay alot --usually under $1.00.

I see Crimson night on your list. I listed that and sold it immediately and had several others email asking for it. It was an obscure paperback i wasn't familiar with.

thanks, dennis.

i was making a list myself, but only got 1/2 way thru the thread.

i found a book the other day that's worth about $150 on ebay and got all excited when i checked it out online. of course, i went back to the shop after researching some more (reading this thread) and could not remember a thing. (although i found a book i hope will get about $50. it was an obvious one.)

also, going back, checking stuff out, i realized the alice cooper bio i passed on is worth ~$1000! i went back today & couldn't find it. oh well...

thanks for the list again & i don't want others to think, "oh, here comes another one..." i do love books and even used to sleep with them as a child.

thank you all for the advice.

A book that looks like nothing.

Hi everyone

Hope you all enjoyed the holidays. This is a great discussion group and I look forward to reading the posting of new entries. I'd like to add an entry - hopefully, it's not a repeat post.

Ted Warren - How to Make the Stock Market Make Money For You. Published by Sherbourne Press, Inc. Los Angeles, CA: 1966

If you'd bear with me, I'd like to make one general comment about ebay bookselling. The vast majority of books that look like nothing are truly books worth little or nothing if they exhibit poor condition. The excuse of "well, I'm not really a bookseller - I don't specialize in books" is not acceptable when a book is an undisclosed ex-library copy or has spine or corner bumps/scuffs, shelf wear, interior separation of spine and end pages, water damages, highlighting/underlining and/or a host of other flaws which are not discussed in the listing. PLEASE - even if your initial bid amount is less than a buck - reveal the flaws. Also, please state the publisher since quality of printing/paper varies (I'm sick of cheap B&N and Chartwell reprints) and the intended reader may vary (e.g. - Landmark/Signature juvenile books vs Oxford University history).

Please excuse the vent - I'm just tired of blowing $3-$4 postage fees on books that I wouldn't have even paid $0.25 for if I had found them at a yard sale. I've been reticent to give negative feedbacks for misstated condition on inexpensive books, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to start.

Again, excuse the vent. Hope everyone has a prosperous new year!

I agree with Rampant Lion. Any description on ebay should be very clear and honest. The buyer should know the item as well as if he has examined it in person.

Item No. 8369931614 is the Mystic Grimoire of Spells and Rituals. Tarot cards and books of this sort seem to have a good resale so I took a flyer on it for $1 at my local thrift store. Sprited bidding took it up to $100!! This was twice as much as a recent copy of Short Timers that I sold. Happy New Year to all!

Ninety and One Years by Julia Thigpen, stories of life in rural Mississippi. I paid $5 for it at a Trash and Treasure sale, just sold it on ABE for $140.

Titles by S. G. Thigpen, her son, are also desirable to some collectors, I've sold them in the 440-$50 range.

Golly gosh dern! Meow-minx... After reading your post I went running to my newest book stack. I just went to the local Goodwill and the name Thigpen rang a clear bell. After looking through the stack I can only conclude that it was one of those books I decided to leave at the store. 😞 Oh well, maybe it will still be there next time. The Book It Shop

ONE OF MY FAVORITE EXCERPTS: In no instance has the theoretical treatment of subjects been subordinated to the practical, and yet the threoretical is at all times illustrated and enforced by numerous practical exercises in which the book abounds. William J. Milne

Kelli, sorry you missed out. I just checked, and so far I've sold 3 Thigpen titles:

Next Door To Heaven, bought at FOL for $1.50 sold for $40 online.

A Boy in Rural Mississippi and Other Stories, bought at FOL for $1 sold for $50 online.

And the one mentioned earlier, just mailed it to customer, sold for $140 as I had only copy online.

I sold all these on ABE but they'd probably sell here, tool
