Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

I used Advanced Search to exclude the word "paint" from my search.

It tells me there were two search results, but shows only one result... which includes the word "paint," twice.  Check out the screenshot:

I don't know of any web site that's a bigger fail than eBay.

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

When I perform that search, I get two results, and although they appear to be the same product from the same seller, there are two different item numbers and slight differences in the titles.

As to why results with "paint" appear when the keyword is excluded, the problem may be related to the fact that the items were listed on the German site with different titles: "Lackstift Set geeignet für Peugeot, Farbnr.: KTB Gallium Grau Met. + Klarlack".

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

When I search using Best Match for:

gallium -paint

I receive the results at this link:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=gallium+-+paint&_sacat=0

It looks like there is a break when searching in order of price. You may want to post this on the Technical Issues board.

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

Actually, to get valid results, need to edit that URL to remove  the '+' character right before the word paint:

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313&_nkw=gallium+-paint&_sacat=0

Thank you, I didn't know there was a Technical Issues forum!  They will be hearing from me a lot.

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

I posted on the Technical Issues board. (And did so more tactfully than I did on this board.)

Went back a day later, and my post is nowhere to be found.  I guess this issue is just too embarrassing for eBay.

Here's a URL that currently illustrates the problem:  https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=gallium+ktb+-paint&_udlo=12&_udhi=12.5

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

Looks like you posted on the Buying board instead of the technical issues board. Here's your post on the buying board:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Buying/quot-Item-Location-Default-quot-vs-quot-Item-Location-Worldwide...

The Technical Issues board is here:

https://community.ebay.com/t5/Share-eBay-Technical-Issues/bd-p/technicalissues-db

If you are going to post there, give an example, and be specific about the problem you are having with search.

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

There was a post on the Technical issues board -- I responded there with a link to this thread so that others responding could see what had already been written about the topic.

The posts on the Technical Issues board may have been removed by a moderator for being a duplicate thread.

Re: Why doesn't eBay get its stuff together?

I have posted on two different topics lately.

  1. My question about the difference between Location: Default and Location: Worldwide was posted to the buying board. (And thank you, eburtonlab,  for replying to that post.)
  2. My issue about eBay failing to exclude the word "paint" from my search was posted to the Technical Issues board (as you suggested). The post was very specific and included an updated screenshot.  Yes, it was largely a duplicate of this thread you're reading now.  But if Technical Issues is the  board  that gets attention from eBay's software developers, the post should not have been removed.  (I don't know why eBay lacks a formal mechanism for users to submit bug reports.  In my business, issues submitted by users are a gold mine of opportunities for improvement.  We could triple the size of our Test Engineering department, and still not gain as much insight as we do from the users.)
