Antique table

Any ideas on age and what this is actually called.  I am guessing 19th century, but not exactly what it was used for.

Yes, American, 19th cent. Could be called a sorting table. The orig green paint is in the condition that collectors love and should not be touched. The work surface wouldn't suffer if a coat of paste wax were applied but don't wax the green. The Shakers made tables like this but this one is a bit heavy handed to be Shaker I think. Getting the two missing drawers made would not be a big deal for a competent furniture restorer.
