What is this object

You put it on the burner, clamp in four pieces of bread, and you've got toast

We used them over campfires when I was a kid in the Girl Scouts. They work amazingly well.

Before the slide. In toaster we had the same thing with an electrical coil behind the bread. Just had to make sure to flip the bread!
