Is this a hat pin or a stickpin or something else?

This has been in our family for a long time and the more I try to research it the more confused I get. Is it a hatpin? It is only 2" long. A stickpin? It doesn't have a stopper on the end. I'd like to sell it but when I read of all the eBay fakes out there I hesitate calling it antique. It is marked S-N 14k on the pin part and the gold on the jewel part is etched with 2253. I believe this is the original box. Any help would be appreciated so I can list it properly.

If the pin has a twisted bottom I believe it is a scarf pin.  If not it looks like a stickpin.

14K gold - might not hurt to have a jeweler check this one - possibly real stones since it is a gold setting.
