HO Scale Railroad Cars

I was helping Mom clean out the garage and found a bunch of HO Scale Railraod cars.  The ones that have boxes the boxes are rough from storage but the cars are in good shape.  Are they worth anything.  Would I waste time posting.  Should I post as a lot?  Suggestions.

The cars themselves are more important than the boxes, but having the boxes, even in less-than perfect shape, is still a plus. What brand are the cars? Is there a date of production somewhere on the cars or the box?

Thank you for the information.     It really helps.   I have a few Tyco ones but most look like they are made by Life Like Trains.   I have several beer cars and a Gerber.  Do date on the box or the trains that I can see I wll keep looking.  I would guess they would be from late 70s early 80s and I was born in 1976 and I think they are mine.   

Would they sell better individually or as a lot you think?
