Timeframe Of Buyer Returning Item Question

I have a buyer that is suppose to return an item by a specific date.  I was wondering, if I don't receive the item by the set date, does eBay close the case automatically or can I close it manually without penalty?

You can't.

You can call eBay once the return deadline has passed and they will close the request or you can wait the full 30 days for it to automatically close.
