Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

I have been selling for 21 years on eBay and I think I'm finally done.  The system is so unfair to sellers I wonder how it would hold up from a legal standpoint.  If a buyer lies and simply checks "not as described" then as a seller I have no voice.  Every assumption is made to protect the buyer.  I nget screwed out of return shipping, I get screwed out of eBay fees, and I get screwed on my feedback.  I wonder if eBay realizes how many good, honest, sellers they are losing.

Yes more and more buyers are catching onto this loophole. There will come a point that it'll be tough to make up for these losses by volume. Hopefully before then ebay would have changed their policies to something else or I'll be on to bigger and better things. It's basically a race to the bottom.

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

I've actually won SNAD cases here on Ebay - but if the buyer is smart than they do a CC chargeback and you end up losing the item, money and pay a $20 fee to PP. Ebay CS is much more seller friendly when it comes to returns than in the past.

For now - report the buyer for misuse of the MBG program ( too many and they lose that service) respond to feedback with a professional reply -  item not returned in the condition in which it was sent - and if you want to go the extra round - file mail fraud and interent fraud forms. For larger priced items - I would file a report with the police in their jurisdiction. Many police depts now have internet depts that do handle scams, child porn and fraud.

It would not stand up to any legal issues because you have signed an agreement with them not to pursue anything legal with them and accept their terms. I agree that selling online has become a riskier and riskier endevour, but this applies to all websites, not just Ebay. Also, sellers with their own websites are still subjected to chargebacks from these wonderful people.  The only way these folks are going to learn not to do this is when you the seller SUBJECT THEM, to legal consequences for theft/mail fraud etc. Eveyone on here who has experienced such behavior should report these people here and get them on the police radar, FBI internet fraud website and do their part to get them off the internet.

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

I had a situation when the buyer returned not the item I sold, but cheap kids toy 100 times cheaper the price I sold the item for.

There is no way to proof to E-Bay that the buyer just tried to get the item for free and get refunded for the theft!

E-Bay policies making this things possible. After 20 years selling and buing on E-Bay I consider not to do that anymore. It's just so ubfair.

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

welcome to the wonderful world of corporate America! I totally 110% agree with your frustration. I USED to sell quite a bit on Ebay but after say 2010 no more. I was done with being cheated by none other than my lovely oh so faux patriotic loving Americans. Not only Ebay but Amazon treats their sellers like parasitic hosts. One can say the same about our illustrious and dubiously corrupt federal government. But alas sometimes one must bid adieu and part ways with the golden calf once the utters run dry!

There is no way of ebay knowing for sure what happened so what do you suggest they do to make things more 'fair'?

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

The sad thing about all these dishonest buyers is that it drives away the honest sellers ... if eBay doesn't do something to significantly weed out these buyers, then the future of eBay will be a contest the dishonest buyers and the dishonest sellers.

I understand the importance of keeping customers, but eBay doesn't need to keep the dishonest ones.

There is no way of ebay knowing for sure what happened  ....

Ok so then why assume its the sellers fault?  Thats how eBay operates %99.9 of the time.

They claim they want to "reset" the transaction - its not a reset if things arent where they were before the transaction - the buyer gets their money and the seller gets back his/her item in the same condition as it was sold.

Isnt that fair?

Since eBay always finds for the buyer - isnt that unfair? Would you buyer from a grocer who always had his finger on the scale? W ould you knowingly do business with someone you know is ripping you off? Would you hire a known thief to run your business?

Why only on eBay is it different?

Try going to Best Buy, buying a 60" LED flat screen - then claim you dont like it, and try to return a 19" B&W Zenith tube TV from 1965. See how far that gets you 🙂

It wont fly there and it shouldnt here.

If you are going to be judge, jury and exocutioner - then be fair ... is that too hard / too much to ask?

So what's your suggestion to make it fair? The buyer is going to say he sent one thing. The seller says he sent something else. How should ebay resolve it?

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

I've have  1 or 2 SNAD's in the past, which were not true. Got one coming back now, she opened the case before she got the item. Said she was expecting the garment to be thicker, it was accurately described it just wasn't what she wanted apparently.  I didn't pay attention last time, we don't get our ebay fees back?

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

You get your fees back if you refund.

You don't if eBay forces a refund.

Yeah, there is no use in fighting it. I accept, report and block.

Thank you!

Re: Return policy sucks and is unfair to sellers!

You get your fees back but its just a credit to your ebay invoice. Therefore its basically like getting a store credit instead of a cash refund. You can "cash" out if your ebay fee balance goes into negative with the refund, but otherwise its just a store credit.
