Lithium-ion batteries

I have seen some posts on these boards complaining about the way lithium-ion batteries are being handled by the post office and others. Apparently not all recognize the dangers. While it is not my job or intent to defend the post office you might be interested in an article in today’s newspaper by the Associated Press.

The Genius Star XI, a cargo ship, was importing a load of lithium-ion batteries into the United States. A fire broke out in the hold (they did not specify how) and it burned for several days. The crew pumped the hold full of carbon dioxide and sealed the hold. The fire finally went out and the ship is now anchored 2 miles off shore.

Among the dangers, beyond the fire, were toxic gases and environmental damages.

Just something to think about before you complain again.
