I am a seller. If I sell an item and the shipping is included in the total cost the buyer pays, then why do I still have to pay for postage?

Because the buyer is paying you to ship. You do realize that when the buyer pays, you receive the shipping money right? You received the total cost. It’s then on you, to go buy postage and ship the item.

Who exactly do you expect to pay for it?

The buyer is paying you for the postage.
You take the money the buyer paid you and buy postage for the package.

This is how it works: example
You sell an item for $20, eBay fees will be around $2 so then you have $18 left, then lets say shipping is $3.
After everything you get $15...
You pay for the shipping yourself. But you're paying it with the buyer's cash...
Hope this helps,

Because it would be really hard for the buyer to ship the item since it's in your possession.

Because the buyer paid you for the shipping when he bought the item, since you say the shipping cost was included.
So you take that money and buy postage to send the item to your buyer.

This is one of the best posts I've read. It's a keeper for sure.

LOL we see this same post all the time. You would be surprised how many new sellers don’t know how shipping works here. Some are just totally cluele, some are used to other venues that collect the shipping money & give the seller a prepaid label.

you take the money the buyer pays you and use some of it to buy postage,I assume you the seller has figured cost of postage in the asking price of the item if you offer free shipping.

Right then Jen. I had no idea people could even think like this. Or non-think as it were.
I defer to Winston Churchill who said: "It doesn't take all kinds, there just are all kinds".
I used that one recently. Was it here?
I had no idea as well. I was pretty amazed when I started seeing threads like this. But then I started selling on other venues that collect the shipping money from the buyer & give the seller a prepaid label so I figure that some of these selers have probably sold on those venues, and of course some are just clueless:)

What do you mean? Don't you leave your packages under your pillow for the eBay Package Fairy, like everyone else?
Man, eBay's seller tutorials just aren't getting it done.

ebay buyer tutorials appear to be even less effective.
