We always take square pictures now because we were told at some point that it shows up better on mobile, but as far as I'm aware, your photos retain whatever aspect ratio you used when you took them. I don't know about resolution, as I believe they're scaled down from larger sizes, but you can take square, rectangular, hey you can use circular pictures if you want, I think.
