buyer trying to return item over a month later.

I sold some wrenches back on Aug 3rd I shipped Aug 5 per my 2 days shipping I have on my listing. 

See the tracking information at the bottom! 

Now over a month later I receive a message today from the buyer.

"Never got the wrench I won from you and I sent your package back. Thanks a lot for nothing!"

That's it, no other communication... The buyer only has 3 reviews and one of those is from me. 

I don't know where to begin and how to proceed. 

How can he be sending something back he never received? 

What questions should I be asking the buyer? I assume tracking information on said package, why he is returning it if he never received anything...  

How can I protect myself?

If anyone could provide some insights it would be greatly appreciated!!!

Looks like he received the package with your tracking data. Does he have you confused with perhaps another seller also selling wenches?

I would let the issue ride for a bit and see if you get anything back. You could respond to the buyer with the tracking number showing delivered. Then, see what comes after that in the messages. You might find out that he did confuse you with another purchase OR something else is up.

I personally, would alert eBay cs right now to make a note in your account.

If they open a case with Pay Pal you just upload the tracking showing delivered and that should be it.

OP, if there is no case or dispute, do nothing.  Since they are not saying anything about what they want you to do, just wait and see what happens.

OR you can tell the buyer that if they are saying that the package arrived empty, you will file a rifled package report with the post office and have them start investigating their address back through the route.  And if they feel that the package might have been rifled while it was on the porch, you will talk to their local police about the thieves in their neighborhood.  That usually gets a scammer to back off.

I did have additional conversations with them I didn't notice. 

They sent me this on Aug 3rd

No worries. will be shipping out today if i can package before the mail gets here if not tomorrow.

I'd reply that the tracking information shows that he received it, include the number and tell them to check it on the USPS website, and then wait for him to make the next move.

I messaged the buyer with the tracking information and he messaged me back apologizing, he had messaged the wrong person.

Does he mean he got an empty package and sent that back to you??
