1099-K

Looks like the small seller on ebay is now going to have that last nail in the coffin to stop selling on ebay.  It used to be a great place to make some extra money, but I have been finally priced out.  Overhead like, cost of item, fees, and the ultra high USPS postage changes over the last few years (price by area of the country, and the biggest scam of Christmas surcharge that starts OCT 1st of each year now, retired mailman here, NEVER have I delivered xmas mail in Oct or Nov!), makes a profit margin of only 10% not worth it,,,,even more so only to be taxed over 600.00 grass sales.  zero money to be had anymore.  Yes, just increase your price, most would say,,,,well after 22 years on ebay I know what prices people are willing to pay,,,,,an increased price is not part of the fix....

You have always had to claim income regardless of whether the threshold was $600 or $20K. So you are only claiming this income "now", then you were not paying all of your taxes.

Re: 1099-K

"With Ebay fees of 21% and now with claiming of $600.00 and anything over is taxed at 28% it will become a loss.  Most resale items have already been taxed when the original owner purchased them."

eBay fees are not 21%.

You will not be charged an income tax of 28% on items that you sold at a loss.

The original purchase transaction for resale items might have been charged a sales tax, but that is completely different from income tax.

If you have limited income (Social Security etc.) then probably your net taxable income from eBay (if indeed there is any) will probably be less than the standard deduction, which for 2022 will be $12,950. And you would pay income tax only on the amount above that threshold.

Re: 1099-K

According to the law you were allowed to make $20,000.00 without claiming it. Now that it has changed. That's my point...now times are changed with the new administration. If you did not receive a 1099-K you do not have to claim. Read the law...I think you are not thinking about what is really going on.

No, that was never the law, though that misinterpretation is apparently widespread.

The thresholds of $20,000 and 200 transactions applied only to the obligation of payment processors to provide a 1099-K to you and the IRS.  That had nothing to do with your obligation to report the income lower than that amount.

A few years ago, a few states tarted setting much lower thresholds; VT and MA set it at $600 in 2018.  Apparently so many non-reporters who owed income tax on those earnings were caught in that change, the feds realized that the rate of unreported taxable income was much higher than they had estimated when setting the $20K threshold for sending 1099-K's.

Re: 1099-K

You must be taking fees as a percent of you selling price rather than as a percent of the buyer's total payment which is how eBay figures it. As you can see in the charts below, the maximum FVF rate is 14.55%, which applies only to a few media categories.

I'm with you. If you are a small seller like some of us, you sometimes end up with very little profit.  What kills me is everyone wants free shipping.  Again, some of us cannot afford to that!

You aren't being taxed on your full gross sales...

If you've been here for 22 years and don't understand that by now, I'd probably quit too. (Hint...writeoffs. Cost of goods. Mileage. Supplies. Etc...)

Why bother with a LLC?  Any seller can file a Schedule C and deduct their expenses to minimize their tax obligation.

This is the way I understood it when my son and daughter set up LLCs for their businesses....

The LLC protects your personal assets in case the business fails....and some other stuff that kind of flew by me....

For small sellers, it probably wouldn't pay to set up an LLC. I usually gross at around 15-20k a year and I never bothered with an LLC.

Re: 1099-K

Just an FYI,

This "change" was put in the stimulus that was passed during the last administration, not the current one.

For what that is worth.

@maryrn59     You are very confused and stating many inaccuracies about taxes and reporting your income and 1099-K,

This applies to all resellers, big or small.

It would be best if you were contacting an accountant or Tax Specialist to get educated about how online sales income works.    The IRS has publications if you do not want to pay someone to educate you on this.

Even if a seller has not reached 20K a year, sales of 10K or 12K is substantial and no longer a "hobby" or for fun.

Once you cross the line of purchasing things with the intent to sell, you are a reseller and a business whether you are making big bucks or not.

As some have already stated, there are benefits of claiming your sales and expenses.

There have been many sellers that report to this chat and others that the IRS does not mess around.  The seller just receives a bill for thousands of dollars and a due date.  Recovering all the lost data, sales, expenses etc, is a huge job and the IRS just wants their money.

Yeah...I'm having a not so bad month too....

I silently give myself high fives when someone says they are leaving because of...MP...Paying Taxes...Someone Said a Bad Thing About  Them on the Boards...Can't Make Money...Blah Blah Blah.

Go ahead an leave (and don't let the door hit you in the *ss on the way out). Less competition for me now.

I'm not sure what free shipping and your sales has to do with anything. If anything, offering free shipping is a huge plus to you. Figure up what it is going to cost you to ship an item to either coast. I'm almost smack dab in the middle of the US, so either coast is about the same distance...I use 90210 for my ship to zip because it is easy to remember...90210...the TV series....And then add that price into my BIN price. I then have a bit of a leeway when someone makes a Best Offer...if they are in the midwest, I might be able to come down a bit in price...either coast won't have as much leeway.

I sell enough stuff, I can just look at it and make a good guesstimate on what it will cost to ship. I quit actual shipping costs when I quit auctions.

Yah...I found this out a couple of years ago....

I went down to my local state sales tax place and started asking them questions about whether I needed a state sales tax license. The woman behind her desk asked what my business name was and started filling out the form and I had the sales tax license when I left.

She didn't even give me time to say whether I really wanted one or not....
