How do promoted listings get views NOT as promoted?

If I understand right, Ebay did away with the dual listing thing, where if you paid to promote, the listing would show twice in search results (once as 'regular' and once as 'promoted' higher in the placement of results).  So if all my promoted listings show up ONLY as promoted, then why do only some of the items in my 'sold' list show as 'Sold Via Promoted Listings'???  I mean I'm glad about the ones that didn't (then I don't have to pay for the promotion), but how did the person find the listing without 'Sponsored' across the top??
