THIS RIFLE BELONGED TO A RETIRED LT COLONEL WHO DIED IN 1992. HE WAS AN AVID COLLECTOR OF OLD ITEMS. HE HAD SEVERAL BOOKS ON REVOLUTIONARY WEAPONS. IT WAS COMPLETELY COVERED IN RUST AND DIRT AND I'VE SPENT 10+ HOURS CLEANING IT UP.

If I was in possession of a gun I thought was from the revolutionary war, I would seek local expert opinion and advise before spending 10 hours cleaning the gun.
I am no weapons expert and would fear doing more harm than good to the guns value by "cleaning off the history". Others will have better advise where to start. I would look at local reenactment groups, gun shops, museums and pawn shops that deal in antique weapons.

I agree completely with @mybigsale
Have a expert look at it and give you an idea of the value.
Did someone advise you to 'clean the history of the gun off' bad advice imo if they did hope you did not harm the antique rifle too much?
Interesting find by the way many of civil war items I have seen on the board but rarely items from revolutionary war'
Good luck on your fact-finding mission on this piece of history
