Anyone have a fix to clean up old postcards that have started the silvering sheen on them? I have tried the isopropyl alcohol (91%)but that only seem to get the dirt off and not eliminate the silvering....HELP...will post a pic in album "Carla's Favs" as soon as approved..
I've found the problem on old photos (1885-1920) that were exposed to excessive humidity, many of which were never displayed or framed. Seems much less common with studio photos, more common with amateur developed shots. What's that tell us? Beats me, I didn't listen in chemistry class, either.
Here are some photoshop folks discussing the problem, with digital solutions: http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-1096.html
Whilst I listened in chemistry (& indeed just got an honorary chair in it, albeit a different branch of the subject), & link #4 gives a good idea of why it happens, my interpretation is that there's not a lot you can physically do about it.
