My wife has had this briefcase for many years and does not remember where/when she bought it. She is retired and wants to sell this, but we want to be sure it is authentic before listing. Can anyone verify this? Serial number is No. 0263-923.

Its genuine and vintage. The style was called the Executive Briefcase, style number 5260, and was introduced by Coach in the Fall of 1989. This particular one was made some time between 1990 and 1993, which is when the style was discontinued. Its very similar to Coachs Wall Street Briefcase from the same time period but this style has the added benefit of an adjustable and removable "guitar-type" (meaning tapered on the ends) shoulder strap.
Heres Coachs catalog page from their Holiday 1990 catalog, Item A:
Good luck with your sale.

Hi, That is a registration number. Your brief is authentic. Its a pre 1994 random registration number for warranty by coach when they did that. I'll find a name for you.

You are correct in referring to the serial number as "serial number."
Prior to 1994, Coach used random serial numbers and often those serial numbers could be registered. But AFAIK, they were never called "registration numbers."
@fashionclubgurl already authenticated and ID'ed the bag.

Sorry, but you are wrong. Prior to 1994, and from the day numbers were stamped inside coach bags, they were in fact stamped with random 'Registration' Numbers, not 'Serial' numbers. se·ri·al num·ber /ˈsirēəl ˈnəmbər/ noun noun: serial number; plural noun: serial numbers a number showing the position of an item in a series, especially one printed on paper currency or on a manufactured article for the purposes of identification. Here are pictures of the Coach 'Registration' Card.
