Hi - I inherited among other things a bunch of Jefferson War Nickels. They were in a plastic bag and are now all a slimy green. Is there a preferred way of cleaning them without damage? thanks Dan

Plain white vinegar and a soft cloth should do the job nicely; plain rubbing alcohol also can remove the greenies.
Hope I helped, and have a great day.

Keep in mind vinegar is a mild acid. So don't leave the nickels soaking it. Chances are washing them with mild dish soap and soft clothe will get most of it.

Don't use any vinegar or soap.
Soak them in pure acetone and rinse in water.
Acetone will not harm the coins.
