Help me understand what kind of coin I have.

This is not Heron's area of esspertise.  However, it does sorda

resemble a Tibet coin Heron once owned.   Just a comment.

Probably Ilkhan dynasty of medieval Persia. There are literally thousands of different varieties of their coins. Too bad you can't get to the International Coin Convention in New York this weekend. Someone there could ID it properly.
