Best way to handle a cracked slab that arrived in the mail?

Hi,

The small first class package looks like it went through a lot of mishandling, maybe by a machine and maybe also left out in the rain.  The outside of the padded envelope is very dirty.  The paper receipt inside has water damage.  The slab is cracked on the front and part of the plastic has chipped off on one edge.  It is a nice coin and I really don't want to return it.  Should I notify the seller about what happened and send some pics?  I think I have ordered several thousand coins through eBay and this has never happened before.

Was it in a padded envelope?  What grading company. I recieved one recently that was chipped PCGS :(.

If it was not at least padded that is the sellers fault.  But this sounds like the PO beat on it.  I would definately let the seller know so they can (at a minimum) know to pack the coins more securely.

The USPS has been losing my packages lately and it is usually rolled coin.  I'm not sure if it is a thief or disgruntled employee, but they go MIA for days even a couple weeks.

I would start by filing a claim for damages with USPS (1st link).

The other 3 links provide the forms, costs and instructions for re-slabbing.

Good Luck.

Yes, padded envelope and slab wrapped in bubble wrap but it did not have one of those little cardboard things the dealers use to protect slabs .  It is an NGC slab.
