Once the bid hit $82, you had only two bidders bidding against each other (one with a proxy bid up until his/her last bid). They either hit their respective limits for what they're willing to pay for the item, or they'll place one last bid in the closing seconds of the auction.

People stop bidding when they've reached the highest amount they're willing to pay. That's how auctions work.
