Can a seller put the same object to auction and at the same time, advertise the same object with the 'buy it now' only option. That seems somewhat unfair to those who participate in an aunction in good faith.

If the seller has multiples of an item, it can be listed twice, once in each format (more details apply). The benefit of this scenario is that the lower-priced auction might actually sell for less than the buy-it-now (BIN) listing, if the bidder is willing to wait; while the BIN listing means a buyer does not need to wait the duration of the auction but might pay a higher price.

If the seller has only one item, then only one listing can be created; but an auction listing can also have a BIN option that persists until the first bid is placed (some categories have slightly different variants). This would mean that a buyer could grab an item before bidding begins, otherwise the auction will play out.
