is it recommended to give a buyer an extended amount of time to pay after an auction? I have a buyer that has won an auction and is asking if I will give the until the 3rd of next month to may. while I admit in my brain why are you bidding if you do not have the money to pay for it? And my instinct is to say no. I want to find out what the Ebay standard is in this situation. Should I allow that long ? if so How do I make sure it happens.
I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on this.

@mh_716 It is up to you if you wish to do this. IF your auto cancelation for unpaid items is not turned on
https://www.ebay.com/Cancel/Preference/UnpaidPurchase
If you do not wish to then advise the buyer that per eBay Policy buyers have 4 days to pay and after that the sale can be canceled as Buyer hasn't paid.
Buyer gets an unpaid item strike on their account and can't leave feedback when you cancel as buyer hasn't paid.

You can give up to 30 days for a buyer to pay, after 30 days s/he can't pay and you can't cancel.
Be sure to check your "Preferences for items awaiting payment" to see if you have it set to automatically cancel after x days (you'd be surprised how many sellers don't know it's set). If you do (and want to keep that in place for buyers in general) you need to add him/her to your exemption list at the bottom of that page. https://www.ebay.com/Cancel/Preference/UnpaidPurchase If s/he doesn't pay by the end of the agreed date you would then need to cancel manually before the 30 days is up.
As to whether it is a good idea, that s/he asked for a specific date is a plus; if s/he didn't ask until after s/he won that is a minus. Keep in mind that if you don't give him/her until then (4 days from now if you mean March 3, don't do it if s/he means April 3 as that is more than 30 days) you'd still need to wait out the 4 full calendar days to cancel for non-payment and then relist (or make SCO but that seldom leads to a sale as bidders get suspicious that you were shilling, and might do so even if you relist) then wait the duration of the auction (or until someone buys as fixed price) and then up to 4 days after that, so its probably best to give the time.
