After a month of selling, I have finally across a buyer who has not paid- it will be 4 days tomorrow- and as tempted as I was to cancel (buyer request cancel) the order due to the lack of response- of whether or not she was still interested in the item. I decided to wait the 4 day period anyway. Now, I assume waiting the 4 day period guarantees no defects onto my account. Can anyone confirm this? I have been trying to find the answer on the policies, but I have not been able too.

You are correct, if you wait 4 calendar days, then cancel as unpaid, there is no defect for cancelling. Also, the buyer is blocked from leaving feedback.
