Several things I have clicked on today automatically went from $5.99 to $12.99 and from $9.99 to $14.99....what is that all about?

Check the listing. It may have multiple prices.
When the listing includes multiple items selected by making choices in drop down menus, like a listing for a pair of shoes with options for color, width and size. That kind of listing can have multiple prices, set by the seller.
You may have selected an alternate item setup to the default and that may raise the price.
