Hello I have a buyer who submitted a bid and I accepted, they want me to send a pay pal request, however I suggested to go through eBay for both our protection, is this common for buyers to ask for this method? I am just selling my old iPhone Xs Max

It's common for scammers to do so.  Especially to new sellers with expensive items.  It is also very much against eBay rules.  If you send a PP invoice or answer them via text or email they will send a fake payment message back to you from "PayPal" or "eBay".
