One way to increase your customer base is find art loving customers who buy artwork from other artists you know. These buyers typically love finding new artists without stopping to buy from the artists they already know and follow. This is the premise behind a business card exchange network. Artists mail each other a stack of business cards. Whenever anyone in the network makes an art or craft sale, s/he'll insert business cards from fellow artists in the package going to their customer. And vice versa. That's a great referral endorsement and word-of-mouth advertising from an artist who is already known and loved by a given shopper. The business cards are enclosed in the package mailed in the mail. The artist attaches a note saying I am attaching a few business cards from my fellow artists in case you might find their art work interesting. I like keeping the group under 10 people, so the customers don't get overwhelmed by the number of cards received. The person who shared this technique with me did not report back any unpleasant reactions from the customers. Only positives. I personally do not find enclosures in the packages annoying. If I am not interested I toss them. But most on-line sellers like Amazon, etc enclose something in package that is somehow related to the purchase, so it is not an unuseal practice.

Quiltworks, that is a very interesting marketing tool. What if, instead of business cards, you enclose a printed sheet (Small like a bag stuffer people use at stores and craft/art shows. We used to get 4 bag stuffers from one sheet of printing paper, plus we used differnt colored sheets for differnt seasons.)that says something like this: "Thank you for purchasing my artwork. I've included a list of other artists you may be interested in. 1. Kim Loberg, purplehorse75 @ eBay, account info website etc. (or what ever info you wish to include and maybe the type of artwork your known for). 2. etc." A small printed sheet would be cheaper and less bulky for mailing than business cards and easier to edit as information changes. A very small icon of the artist's artwork could even be added to the flyer so the buyer could see the actual artwork. Kim
