What is the QR code on the shipping label used for?

Does anyone know what the QR code at the top of the shipping is used for? Is it just another bar code?

What is the QR code on the shipping label used for?

It's an intelligent mail barcode that contains all kinds of info for sorting and tracking.

What is the QR code on the shipping label used for?

Can it be scanned in just like the bar code on the bottom?

The Post Office can scan it off  your phone and print the label from it.  I don't know if they will do bulk labels - I  use it only when I have one package going to the PO.

There are 3 different intelligent mail barcodes on the label (or 1 or 2, depending where you  purchase the label).

The one on the top can be square or rectangular or non-existent, depending where label is purchased.

The tiny square one by the address and duplicated at the bottom under the large barcode (it's often referred to by some as a QR code, but technically it's not) was added by USPS about a year ago and you can read more about it here. According to that linked news article, "If an employee or piece of equipment is not able to scan the regular barcode, the Intelligent Mail matrix barcode can be scanned instead."

The large traditional barcode on the bottom can be scanned by everything: sorting machinery, the post office, handheld scanners, self service kiosk.

None of them are QR codes - they are all intelligent mail barcodes.

The QR code generated when a seller purchases a label online is different. The QR code can be scanned by the post office, or scanned at the self service kiosk, to have a label printed by USPS. The QR code itself is never printed on a label.

The QR code may contain a unique tracking number or identifier associated with your shipment. This allows carriers and logistics providers to track the movement of the package throughout the shipping process.
It may include information about the sender, recipient, shipping method, and other relevant details to facilitate the efficient processing of the shipment.
Depending on the shipping carrier and the specific shipping label, the QR code might contain additional information relevant to the shipping and delivery process.
