Buyer returned an item and the carrier lists the package as damaged in tracking

In short, I've sold an item and I do not have returns enabled, but had to accept this one since the buyer said that the item is defective. The package has been on the way to me for 2 days and all of the sudden today the shipment tracking says that the package contents have been damaged and that the shipper will be contacted, which in this case would be the buyer? (I paid for the return label through ebay).

What are my options for this as it seems obvious that the buyer did not package the item as they should have. Is it just inevitable that ebay will force me to refund the buyer or can the buyer be partly blamed for this?

If you paid for the label, you are responsible for the shipment.

You'll be refunding the buyer, damaged or not.

Have a great day
