I`m going with earrings ,due to the curve of the design. They would look a bit odd on shoes with the left/right directional curve on them.

I noticed that too . That's what made me think sweater clip that lost its chain . Odd clips for earrings . Don't you think ?

I just tried them on as earrings. Interesting, they are more comfortable then most clip earrings

They're pretty old clips if I remember correctly. The fronts are 30s pot metal.
