It has a simple C catch. Neither Silvo nor Brasso produced any tarnish. The brooch is as dark as it looks in the photo.

The back does look like brass; I rubbed it with Brasso but no tarnish, not even the slightest amount, came off.

What is it signed behind the clasp? Is it Western Germany?

My guess is brass that was intentionally oxidized to produce the antiqued brass or bronze look.

There isn't any signature. There are a lot of lines and squiggles on the back but nothing makes a signature.
The metal itself is fairly thin and lightweight.

It looks to me like the clasp is actually missing the roll-over part (it goes in between the 2 pcs showing). Don`t think it is a true C-clasp. That could make a difference in the age

So, pretty much worthless then.

I wouldn't call it worthless. The clasp can be fixed if you have the right piece. It is vintage. Do some research and see what pins of this sort are going for and it can always be put in a lot. People use these older pieces to make reworked pieces and to dress up boxes and things.

Good advice. Thank you.
