No one here will provide a style name without seeing more relevant details to verify its authenticity first; e.g. interior, heat stamps, logos etc. (And having an I. Magnin tag attached ain't one of 'em Smiley Wink)

You can reply to this thread & use the camera icon as many times as needed to post more pics.

Hi there! Thanks for the response-I'm 99% sure the bag is authentic. The gold hang tag is stamped Chanel and the serial number tag (though beat up) matches the number on the card. Hoping to get a style name, it's driving me crazy! 😄

Sorry, but I'm not even 10% convinced this bag is not fake. Having matching serial numbers means nothing when other critical details are wrong; i.e.

Misshaped CC logo on leather fob

Poorly stamped CHANEL logo in uneven, misshaped font & wrong color (even if the photo angle made the C appear flattened, that didn't cause the lopsided A or the equal-barred E).

"Made In Italy" is also badly stamped with uneven, blotted lines & misaligned font.

Diamond stitching is misaligned along the bottom

And that's without seeing the zipper brand, the other side of the card or the bag.

I don't know any reliable authentication specialists in Chanel bags that I could recommend, but others may.

For some reason, when I quote, it's not posting correctly so I'll do it this way.

@genemaat said, "I don't know any reliable authentication specialists in Chanel bags that I could recommend, but others may."

Etinceler specializes only in Chanel and is absolutely reliable.

And I believe that Authenticate4U has a Chanel authenticator whose forte is vintage.

I feel comfortable recommending both and I think this is one of those cases where it's worth it to invest <$10.

Please come back with their findings!

Hi!

The pics I took were just quick snaps-in real life nothing is misaligned or crooked. I'll contact one of the recommended authentication sites and see what they have to say. I'll let you know what I find out! Thanks again!

Hi everyone!

I purchased an authentication through etenciler this afternoon and had an answer this evening. They said in their opinion the bag is authentic. I of course sent them uncrooked pics. They couldn’t give me the exact style name, they just referred to it is a ‘camera style’ bag. Thank you for the recommendations on authenticators!

So, did they explain the anomalies in the stamped logo font (especially the wrong E), the odd-shaped CC on the fob or stitching alignment?

Re detail:Misaligned-diamond-stitching.jpg

FYI, I don't recommend Étinceler for any vintage Chanel for very good reasons (PM for info); but if Authenticate4U do have a vintage Chanel bag specialist, as Alberta mentioned, I would be most interested in their conclusions.

I'll be happy to pay for that 2nd opinion too, for my own research. Smiley Happy

Hi there, the bag is authentic, all of its marking are correct for this bag from this era. Chanel don't named their bags, they referred to as simply either flap bag, tote bag, and in this case the bag is camera style bag. Markings are vary from time to time, when someone only understand certain marking only and are not well versed in knowing what marking should look like from certain era, then they would make wrong conclusions. As I stated earlier, the bag is authentic based on correct marking from that era. I hope this helps! 🙂

Well I can further clarify that the font is correct for this era. This is vintage bags and their marking are different from newer bags so one will understand that  the bag is indeed fine.

Hi @lisatea111,

Thank you so much for responding! I was hoping someone familiar Chanel bags from the mid-'80s on would be able to help me better understand this.

As my specialty is Chanel logo font typeface history, I can generally date their products by decade through subtle changes in the letters (e.g. the E went from equal upper/lower bars with short center to the current slightly longer foot around 1985). So I'm naturally intrigued by any deviations — to know if it was due to some quality control variation because of a change in manufacturing facility or management?

Just think of me as one of those annoying kids always asking why?  Smiley Happy

And thank you, genemaat, for offering to pay for authentication! But I don't know if they would be able to offer anything that we don't know already. Smiley Happy

No problem, @gathering*vintage. My offer still stands though, since the more specific information one can possibly get about when, why & what time/season any Chanel deviations occurred would certainly tell us what we don't know — which can only help for future reference re accuracy & context.

Being an avid researcher (aka PITA) specific reasons & details are always essential; the devil really is in the details grin
