Help Identifying this Antique

Picked this today and can't find any info about it. Designed to hang and is made of cast alum., with no markings. Cigarette butt box for lobby, train, theater , bus  ??  Approx. 12" tall.  Thanks in advance.

I think you've solved it. Ashtray from what you mentioned 30's-50's. American. Snuff Here it to put out the ciggy butts.
