New Return Policy???

I had a buyer open a case to return an item on the 15th of December.  I got an email from eBay saying that if it wasn't returned by the 30th, the case would be closed and my money put back in my account.  After numerous calls to eBay, I was told three different stories.  I was first told that the case would close on the 5th, then the 7th, and then the 15th.  I was told that eBay had changed their return policy to 30 days.  Why would eBay say the buyer had till the 30th to return it, then not comply with this.   I just wish eBay had sent an email about this...but nothing.
