Bidding History on an Item

When I look at the bidding history of an item I have bid on, I notice at the far right of each bid listed is written a time. I would assume (and would prefer if) that time represented the time remaining in the auction at which that particular bid was entered/executed. However, I notice that some of the times shown, particularly during the final 24 hours of the auction, are not listed in descending order - one skips to less than one hour, then the higher bid above it moves back to 3 hr - - What the heck are these time notations supposed to denote, then???
