This little pin is driving me nuts, I can’t read the symbols on the back, and I have spent a few days trying to find it online. I’m hoping someone recognizes it or knows the symbols to give me a better idea. He is not magnetic, but I have not had the metal tested. Thank you for any help!

The United Way used to be known as the Community Chest, and part of there annual fund-raisers involved the "Red Feather" campaign. It's a possibility that this pin may have been given to grade school children during the Community Chest period, as a reward for offering a donation to the Community Chest.
Back in the 1950s, I recall similar fund-raising activities in our grade school, involving Christmas Seals and Easter Seals; so it wouldn't surprise me if there was a junior edition of Community Chest back then, either.
This is just a guess, mind you -- so don't take it to the bank!

I think you may be right. This pin might be related to this Community Chest award statue from 1950:

Thanks @lacemaker3 -- sometimes being 3/4 of a century old comes in handy!
