Question . If I have an item listed with First Class and it weighs up higher bringing it to Priority , do I contact the buyer to explain that I will be shipping differently? Note, I am NOT asking buyer to pay more, merely asking approval to ship differently due to weight differential. Thank you.

No, as long as you are upgrading, but not changing carriers, you are free to do so without asking.

As far as I know, you can ask anything you want.  What do you intend to do if the buyer says "No"?
