Is it possible that you might be confusing a zero for a Letter O or a one for a capital I?

eBay's system doesn't recognize pre-standardization VIN codes. For American manufacturers standardization (the 13 character code used today) started in 1981 and was in full effect by the start of 1982. Non-American manufacturers adopted standardization a bit latter but most European & Asian manufacturers were onboard by the mid-to-late 80's.
The inabilty of eBay to recognize pre-standardization VIN codes calls into serious question the accuracy of eBay's compatibility charts as well as the fitment guarantee program.

Does that mean the VIN on your listing is a fake VIN?

The VIN showing in the listing now is correct for a 1984 VW Vanagon (at least as far as the codes prior to the serial number are concerned). There is no photo showing the VIN plate in order to match to the serial number given in the description.
